I stumbled across a comparison shot of a picture with and without UV filter on the SA forums (post courtesy of SoundMonkey)
You can clearly see the haze generated by the filter when taking a picture with a bright light source.

This might not matter on your average daylight picture, but if you're looking for that extra bit of clarity, you should consider discarding the filters.
I guess this is mandatory for night shots, especially with longer exposures.
