Psudoscience. The effects are very inconsistent. Sometimes it punches neat holes, sometimes the material around the holes it creates expands OUTWARDS. Take when Killy shoots the guardian in the confrontation when Cibo is downloading herself into her first host body.

The head of the guardian is gone, yet there is a massive aperture created in the back wall with the wall material cratering up around the hole.

Additionally, if matter was sucked INTO the beam, there would be observed inward tearing effects and vaccuum suction into the path of the beam, leaving holes that are far less than uniform. Neither effect is ever observed through any medium throughout the series at any point.

Thanks SolidAndShade, your explanation wasn't that bad at all, but i don't think the matter is sucked into the weapon.

But the theory of a gravity beam that compresses the matter sounds good, according to nuclear fusion, the cause of the explosion afterwards could be energy output created by the fusion of matter. And the time between shooting and explosion could be explained with it needs some time until the matter collapses through the gravitation to fuse.

I currently don't have much access to the physics material to support my theory, but here goes:

The GBE condenses energy inside itself (probably through nuclear fusion or such). This energy when discharged takes the form of a high density beam. Probably through some sort of gravity capacitator, it generates a gravitational field around the energy beam as it his releasd.
The Gravitational Field is also extremely dense and alters the molecules of anything that it comes into contact with but nothing else (so the beam itself never actually touches anything). I believe that this ties in with the point Shakken was making.

The beam and its field lose energy and degenerate after a period of time and finally the beam will make contact and explode. Only when Killy fires it at a low power are we able to see this, but once at Level 4, Pcell says that it left a trail 70km long.

The gravitons are hypothetical particles that are a 'vehicle' for gravity [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graviton]. I think an emission of gravitons - a beam - would resoult in a massive distortion of the gravity field along all the beam.
An excessive gravity - greater than the internal cohesion of the matter around - would result in a collapse of the matter that have suffered the graviton beam (this is why IMHO the traces of the beam are so clear in strong materials like the megastructure walls... since the material is extremely hard, the beam section is collapsed, but the surrounding material is preserved thank to its hardness).
The destructions of building and architectures - way more catastrophic - may be due to the low cohesion of the matters they're built of - the collapse of the beam section cause the collapse of the whole surrounding structures).[/url]

First off I don't know too much about physics, but I would say this:

The GBE (in my dirty english), represents the will of Killy, or any user for that matter. So while there are many theories that you could derive the GBE's function from, in the end the ammunition's propellant is something that is not supported by our current science. It is Killy's true representation of humanity's wishes that allow him to power that gun in such a way. Remember when he linked with all those disabled safeguards's brains to increase the power? He was borrowing their brain power. Aside from that I think our author was using simpler physics to draw the effects of gun. Think of armor piercing bullets. The hollow tip goes in like a needle and comes out like a dinner plate. The initial trajectory of the bullet is straight and narrow, as soon as it hits dense matter it expands, yet the forward progress fails to dissipate. I think if you combine the basic physics of current gun technology, the high-end anti-matter theories discussed, and the archetypal understanding of the importance of a hero's want/need to protect in anime; you get the GBE.

My concept would be when it hits a target, everything around the beam is pulled out by a strong force of gravity making a gaping hole.......now that would really hurt when he shoots you in the belly XD

in biomega, there is a mega weapon that is powered by brain waves. so it's reasonable that nehei intended the gbe to connect to the user as well.

Hi there, im not very good in english, i will try to explain myself at my best about what i think.
How i think GBE work:
I can see the GBE like a particle accelerator and, that agree at this theory, im sure im not the only one.
GBE shoot matter particles at enormous speed, and in this case, the particles shooted are very very dense and the speed is near the light speed (or the same of the light speed).
This speed allow to increase at incredible levels the matter's mass and, since the matter was at hig density too, it would result in something unstoppable, able to pierce anything.
The only things that can influence the shoot trajectory are others gravitons sources and probably a very high powered magnetic field.

The blast effect:
The repulsing effect showed when GBE shoots create holes in the targets is due, i think, that first the target matter is ripped off by the mass shooted, attracted by its gravity, when this happen the target's matter expand in the direction of the "bullet", when bullet pass through, the target damaged area contracts. And due to this at the end of his trajectory the bullet is probably more massive.
I think the blast effect is due to the target's matter direct reaction caused by the mass shooted. It's like a reaction that push the matter itself at critical levels, breaking the bonds of matter, like a nuclear reaction.

The alimentation of the GBE:
Probably at low power is autonomous, it wouldn't need external energy sources. You remember at the start of the journey when a silicon creature stole the Killy's GBE and use it without problem? Probably it will require a external supply of energy even at low power, if the wielder shoot repeatedly in a short time.
When things got serious, at medium power's range, the GBE need the wielder's energy to fill the energy needed, the autonomous GBE energy is not enough, this can dry out all the energy of the wielder in short time if shooted too often in a short time.
When the GBE shoot at maximum power, it will need all the possible external energy, probably if the wielder is not at full energy this option is denied, remember the Safeguard Exterminator? Killy had to use all the safeguard level 1 brains's connection near him to draw enough energy to be able to use the max power, probably because he shooted more than once within the medium power's range. He was able to use it when he went in the flow of melted metal during the safeguard 9 attack, he was able to do it, because: 1) he was filled of energy when the safeguard 9 "repaired" him, 2) he shooted few times during the attack at the Davinelulinvega's base and his energy was at good level (he was injured by the gothic cutie cyborg attacks, at right arm and in face, so are the hits that put him KO and not energy carency).
